Ways to Chill Out and Help Stop Stress

If you’re down in the dumps and just can’t seem to find a way up, Popsugar has a list of 20 different ways to chill out, stop stressing and, hopefully, be happier. Some of the get-happy tricks include meditation, acupuncture, body stretches, different types of water therapy, massages, listening to music and imbibing in a healthy food or a cup of your favorite tea.

It’s true that stress and anxiety can have serious health consequences, including weight gain, high blood pressure and heart disease. It may also trigger heart attack and the onset of dementia, among other serious chronic conditions. But it’s also true that there are things you can do quite easily to help your body become resilient to stress, and ultimately make you happier.

The scientific term for this is resilience — "the ability of your body to rapidly return to normal, both physically and emotionally, after a stressful event." Something you can do anywhere, any time, to improve your resiliance is to employ a breathing technique called the 4-7-8 exercise. It entails breathing silently through your nose to the count of 4, holding your breath to the count of 7 and then exhaling to the count of 8. Repeat three times.

Besides breathing exercises, there are many other helpful stress management tools, such as the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). EFT is an energy psychology tool that can help reprogram your body's reactions to everyday stress, thereby reducing your chances of developing adverse health effects.

Other stress management techniques include getting regular physical activity, mindfulness training, yoga and simply scheduling time to have fun. Laughter is a huge stress-buster, too, that not only can boost your immune function, but induce optimistic feelings as well as pain relief.
