Care Tips for Properly Storing Loose Tea and Bulk Herbs

Loose teas and bulk herbs are fast becoming a staple in many people’s pantries as consumers turn to natural substances for achieving and maintaining good health. But do you know the best way to store them so they stay fresh as long as possible? To help with that, The Healthy Home Economist offers six tips that include minimizing exposure to moisture and light and maintaining proper temperature control.

A wide variety of herbs, organic coffee and teas are fast becoming the go-to favorites of people who are embracing a natural health lifestyle. Chinese Green tea is one of these, and it has many proven health qualities, but matcha tea, first produced in Japan around 805 A.D., actually exceeds green tea’s health benefits due to matcha’s powerful antioxidants.

Matcha, which means “powdered tea,” has been shown to fight inflammation, reduce your risk of heart disease and lower levels of triglycerides and blood sugar in diabetics. L-theanine and catechins, such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), are compounds that give matcha tea many of its healing capabilities.

If it’s green tea you prefer, though, take heart: Studies show that people who drink green tea one to six days a week have less mental decline and a lower risk of dementia than non-tea drinkers. Other studies show that people who drink six cups of green tea a day have lower levels of damage from inflammation.

To boost the benefits of green tea, add a squirt of lemon juice to your cup. Previous research has demonstrated that vitamin C significantly increases the amount of catechins available for your body to absorb. In fact, citrus juice increased available catechin levels by more than five times, causing 80 percent of tea's catechins to remain bioavailable.
