Fluid Leaking From Brain Into Ear Linked to Obesity

An odd anomaly linked to obesity is on the rise in the U.S., Today reports. The condition occurs when the brain spouts a leak and spews fluid out through the ear. An Indiana man suffered with it for 10 years before doctors diagnosed it. An Indiana University surgeon said he used to perform two surgeries a year to fix this; now he does two to five a month. Seventy percent of his patients are women.

Obesity is a condition wherein your body has excess weight. It is detrimental to your health because it can lead to various complications such as diabetes, heart disease and joint pain — and now, apparently, it can also thin your skull enough to make your brain leak. It sounds like a horror movie, but it’s just another example of the life-threatening complications and diseases that can occur with carrying too much weight on your body.

About 75 percent of men and 67 percent of women are either overweight or obese in the U.S. The findings are based on body mass index (BMI), which divides a person's weight by the square of his height — and this is a flawed measurement tool that actually underestimates obesity, meaning the real numbers are probably worse.

There is so much I could say about this, but the best thing to say is that if you’re among those who are overweight or obese, there is hope for leading a healthy life. One way to begin is to simply ditch processed foods. Junk food is such an issue with both weight and malnutrition, in fact, that the United Nations has declared that junk foods are not part of a sustainable food system. They are nothing but fillers: They put weight on you, but deny you important nutrients.

Processed foods not only have high sugar content, but other ingredients designed to make you want to eat more. Choose fresh, whole, raw foods for snacks, and grass fed, pastured meats, dairy and poultry products, and then try to cook at home as much as possible. Reducing portions and regular exercise will also help. If you’d like to know how to burn fat instead of glucose for fuel — and subsequently lose weight, my new book, “Fat for Fuel,” will help get you on the path to health.
