No Longer the Hot New Thing? Teen Vaping Falls, Study Says

Vaping has been falsely portrayed as a safe alternative to analogue cigarettes. Since 2011, nicotine vaporizers have made significant en roads in teens and young adults. CNBC reports that this trend has been decisively reversed. The number of teens who use e-cigarettes plunged in the previous year. This is no doubt due to growing awareness of the dangers posed by these devices.

The battle against vaping is being won because it has been exposed as unsafe. If you continue to use e-cigarettes, there's a chance you're doing so to reduce your risk of exposure to dangerous chemicals, or to experience smoking without the risk of using tobacco. However, you need to get your facts straight and realize that you may be putting yourself at just as much risk of dangerous health conditions.

E-cigarettes come with serious risks. For instance, diacetyl is an artificial flavor used for adding a buttery taste to microwave popcorn. It has been linked to respiratory damage, including inflammation and permanent scarring of the airways, dubbed "popcorn lung," in workers at a microwave popcorn plant.

Unfortunately, the perception that e-cigarettes are safe has fueled the rise in middle school and high school student use. From 2011 to 2015 the use of e-cigarettes (vaping) in middle school rose from 0.6 percent of students to 5.3 percent. The good news is that the number of teenage vapers dropped from 3 million to 2.2 million in the previous year.

E-cigarette use is especially prominent among current and former cigarette smokers, many of whom use them to help break their smoking habit. But, does it really work? A study published in late 2014 showed that smokers who used e-cigarettes daily were more likely to quit tobacco, but those who used them intermittently were six times less likely to quit smoking tobacco.

There are better ways to quit smoking. First consume only nourishing whole foods and read through my comprehensive nutrition plan. It is also important to develop a well-rounded exercise regimen. I also recommend the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). It is an empowering tool that can clear out emotional blockages from your system, thus restoring your mind and body's balance and helping you break the addiction and avoid cravings.
