How Smart People Handle Toxic People

Everybody has encountered at least one toxic person in their life. You know, someone whose negativity seems to spread like a cancer on everyone else, including you. In an effort to help combat this toxic stress, Huffington Post suggests ways to take back your power. Strategies include setting limits and boundaries by turning the problem back to the toxic person, and rising above the behavior by refusing to acknowledge it or fall victim to it.

Stress affects your body in physical, emotional and social ways, including becoming the toxic person that Huffington Post warns against. Because chronic stress can have serious health consequences, including weight gain, high blood pressure, dementia and heart disease, it’s important to learn ways to reduce stress in your life, not only to help yourself, but to keep yourself from becoming the toxic person everyone wants to avoid.

Clearly, stress is an inescapable part of life — but it's important to understand that it is how you deal with it that determines whether it will translate into health problems later. One easy technique for dealing with stress is to learn to breathe properly, thereby optimizing oxygenation, lowering your blood pressure, reducing stress, balancing your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

One of my personal favorites is the 4-7-8 breathing exercise, which can be done anywhere, anytime something upsetting happens, before you react. The key to this exercise is to remember the numbers 4, 7 and 8. Simply breathe in silently through your nose to the count of 4; hold your breath to the count of 7; exhale through your mouth to the count of 8, making a “whoosh” sound; and repeat three times for a total of four breaths.

Another helpful stress management tools is the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). It's an energy psychology tool that can help reprogram your body's reactions to everyday stress, thereby reducing your chances of developing adverse health effects.
