Why You Should Think Twice Before Ordering Coffee or Tea on a Plane

Add airplane coffee and tea to the list of travel dangers to be avoided. Travel and Leisure reports that most flight attendants and pilots avoid these beverages because they rely on tap water from the plane itself and studies have shown this water is often contaminated. 

If you want to fly safely, avoiding coffee and tea from the plane is just a starting point. There are a number of other proactive tips you can take to protect yourself while traveling. Your first line of defense is a strong immune system. Proper nourishment, sleep and stress management will keep you healthy even when you encounter the abundant germs found on planes and other unsanitary public areas.

When in an airplane's cramped quarters, one of the most common concerns is that someone sneezing has the potential to infect the whole plane, especially since about 50 percent of the cabin air is recycled. This is possible but unlikely for a couple of reasons. Unlike their potable water supply, planes possess effective and high-tech air cabin filters. Also, the ventilation is compartmentalized and in a worst case scenario any airborne germs would only circulate in through a discrete area of the cabin.  

Touching contaminated surfaces is a much more likely conduit of disease and germs. This is true in any public space. This is why washing your hands with plain soap and water is so important. One trick I use in an airport is to only use restrooms that don't have doors. This is most of the ones in newer airport terminals. Oddly, if you go into the expensive and private airport lounges you have to touch the doors.

When on a long flight, walk around frequently to prevent the risk of pulmonary embolism. A final tip for flyers is to consider using an Earthing/grounding pad while flying to help correct the bioelectrical disruption you experience when you are not in contact with the earth's surface. One trick that I have been using for a few years after a tip from Dr. Stephen Sinatra is to remove one of my shoes when flying and put my foot on the metal support frame on the seat in front of me. Doing this will ground you to the airplane frame and help mitigate damage from radiation at 35,000 feet.
