Millions Consumed Potentially Unsafe Water in the Past 10 Years

Are you drinking dirty water? Even if you don’t think you are, you may have been drinking it for years without knowing it, according to The Iowa Center for Public Affairs. In a report on its IowaWatch website, researchers say millions are drinking contaminated water that potentially could cause cancer, gastrointestinal diseases and developmental diseases in children, even when it’s presumably safe because it’s treated by local water systems. According to the investigators, hundreds of billions of dollars are needed to make America’s drinking water truly safe.

Tragically, half the world is drinking contaminated water. Not only are groundwater aquifers rapidly depleting, but much of the world's water supply has become too contaminated to drink or bathe in. Additionally, toxic runoff from industries, improper disposal of medications and agricultural runoff from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and large factory farms all contribute to a severe water pollution problem.

While factory farms are undoubtedly the greatest contributor to water pollution in the U.S., posing multiple threats to humans, plants and wildlife, nearly 19,000 public water systems also detected lead at levels above 3.8 parts per billion, which would put a formula-fed baby at risk.

What this means is that filtering your water at home is no longer an option. It is an absolute necessity if you really want to reduce your exposure to water treatment chemicals, pesticides, medications and carcinogenic metals. To be certain you're getting the purest water you can, filter the water both at the point of entry and at the point of use. This means filtering all the water that comes into the house, and then filtering again at the kitchen sink and shower.
