NSAIDs Linked to Heart Attacks

The fact that Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are both widely used and considerably more dangerous than advertised has long since been established. In the United States, more than 70 million prescriptions for NSAIDs are written annually.

Each year, an estimated 107,000 patients are hospitalized for NSAID-related gastrointestinal complications. At least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur each year among arthritis patients alone. Now a new study in BMJ has linked NSAIDs with an increased risk for myocardial infarctions, which is another term for heart attacks.

NSAIDs carry further risks as well. Researchers have determined that women who took NSAIDs in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy had a significantly higher risk of miscarriage. All NSAIDs, including over-the-counter aspirin and ibuprofen, are associated with potentially serious side effects such as cardiovascular problems, GI bleeding, kidney problems, and hypertension.
