Rare, Polio-Like Paralyzing Disorder Affecting Children on the Rise, CDC Says

Analysis by Dr. Joseph Mercola

A devastating disease that mimics polio is on the rise in the U.S., with six cases reported in Minnesota alone, according the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dubbed acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, it is striking children under 10 years old; the CDC reported several cases in 2014, mostly in California and Colorado, USA Today reports. It is connected with the spread of the enterovirus known as EVD68, and there is no specific treatment for it.

It’s interesting that AFM always seems to come around about the same time children are getting their back-to-school vaccines — a process that distorts the immune response. This reminds me of my recent interview with Dr. Thomas Cowan, a practicing physician and founding board member of the Weston A. Price Foundation, who shared his perspective on vaccines and autoimmune disease, in conjunction with his latest book, “Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness.”

In his book, Cowan goes into the toxic component of polio, which is an enterovirus, meaning it lives in your gastrointestinal tract, and Cowan’s views on this are worth listening to.

With the EVD68 virus, thousands of people were actually stricken with it in 2014, and at least a dozen children died. Yet you didn't hear about this on the news because it was not something the government was interested in promoting — at the time.

In an interview I did with award-winning journalist Sharyl Attkisson, she said that when she asked the CDC certain questions about EVD68 back then, they replied they hadn’t gathered that information. But when she searched the web, she found the CDC had lied. She wrote a book exposing many of the strategies that go on to suppress this kind of information.

The problem, she said, is that “the media simply reports whatever the government says, even though the government has been caught providing false information, including providing false statements under oath to Congress.”

So what does this tell you when you hear that the CDC is now warning people of a “rare polio-like” disease that appears to be spreading? The key is to have the courage to trust in the truth that your body is designed to maintain health.

Again, this reminds me of an interview I’ve done, this time with Dr. Suzanne Humphries, who writes about the immune system and the history of how vaccines were introduced — to the detriment of how your immune system is supposed to work. Her book, “Dissolving Illusions: Disease, Vaccines, and the Hidden History,” delves into this in excruciating detail.

In the meantime, there's just no question that improving your innate immune system — through reducing sugar and processed foods in your diet, improving your gut flora, leading a healthy lifestyle, and having adequate vitamin D levels, ideally through sensible sun exposure — will provide a far more effective immune response and virtually eliminate any risk of developing a life-threatening infection.
