Bacteria Develop Antibiotic Resistance 100,000 Times Faster After Exposure to Roundup

Written by Dr. Joseph Mercola

Bacteria that have been exposed to Roundup, dicamba and 2,4-D develop resistance to antibiotics 100,000 times faster than the same bacteria that have never been exposed to the herbicides, University of Canterbury has found. “An important finding of the new study was that even in cases where the herbicides increase the toxicity of antibiotics, they also significantly increased the rate of antibiotic resistance — [which] could be contributing to the greater use of antibiotics in both agriculture and medicine,” the university’s press release said.

The researchers had previously reported that the active ingredients in the herbicides increases the potential for infection with Salmonella and E. coli.

This is a stunning new development that literally stops you in your tracks if you’ve been following the long, disturbing saga tying Roundup (active ingredient glyphosate) to bee deaths, child deformities and cancer, just to name a few. It’s only been a few days since I talked about researchers calling out glyphosate for contributing to bee deaths around the world — and this is significant, seeing that nearly 5 billion pounds of this chemical are applied to farm crops every year.

Just a few weeks ago I talked about the devastating health effects that children in South America are suffering in areas where farmers are forced to use Roundup and other agrochemicals on their crops — causing genetic mutations in the children and multiple health conditions for the farmers and anyone else exposed to the chemicals. Plus, if this isn’t bad enough on its own, we now know that glyphosate is showing up in the very cereals you feed your children.

And, of course, who can forget the case of Dewayne Johnson who, in August, won his lawsuit against Monsanto — now Bayer AG — in which he claimed that Monsanto was responsible for “negligent failure” for not warning consumers that Roundup is carcinogenic. As a groundskeeper, Johnson had used Roundup over a period of years, and now has Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

While each of these examples are shocking enough on their own, the worst possible information that’s come out of all of this is the fact that, in the discovery process for Johnson’s case, we found that the very agency that’s supposed to protect you from things like this — the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — colluded with Monsanto to hide the cancer connection.

You can review key documents from this case on the U.S. Right to Know website if you haven’t already, but I can tell you in advance that it includes correspondence that clearly reveals Monsanto knew Roundup has safety problems, and in more ways than one.

When you add the fact that glyphosate and the chemicals being used to replace it, dicamba and 2,4-D, are also contributing to the world’s epidemic of antibiotic resistance, there just aren’t many words left except to remind you that this deceit was not by chance.

From orchestrated fake news stories to push their agenda, to hiding behind front groups with friendly-sounding names like Science Media Center and the American Council on Science and Health, to hiring university professors and other “trusted” writers to create glowing reports for them, Monsanto has succeeded in not only destroying our lives in the name of profits for them, but your children’s future, and quite possibly, your children’s children’s future, as it will take decades to overcome this devastation.

At least now, with the court victory (Monsanto plans to appeal, though) and as their deceit keeps being revealed, our politicians and regulatory agencies will have to face what they’ve allowed to occur and, hopefully, resolve to place human health before corporate profits as we move forward.
