If you tend to reward yourself every now and then, you’re not alone. “Treating yourself” is often synonymous with indulging in a greasy meal or sugary dessert or making an expensive purchase — but it doesn’t have to be.

Whether you’ve had a stressful week, got a promotion at work or finally finished that big project you’ve been working on, it’s perfectly OK to treat yourself — you deserve it! But instead of going all out on a candy binge or splurging on an item you probably don’t need, there are plenty of other ways to give yourself a hug or a pat on the back — whichever you may need — without putting your health or your bank account at risk.

Here are 10 healthier ways to treat yourself:

  1. Give yourself the gift of relaxation: Clear your calendar and get some quality “me” time!
  2. Cook a healthy meal: If you’re not someone who enjoys cooking, this “treat yourself” idea might not be for you. But for those who enjoy spending a little quality time in the kitchen, try cooking a healthy meal you’ve been wanting to try — and enjoy it!
  3. Have a spa day: If you’re tight on funds, create your own spa at home. Give yourself a mani/pedi, try a homemade face mask, light some candles and take a hot bath to relax at home.
  4. Get outside: If you’re cooped up in an office most of the time, one of the best ways to treat yourself is to enjoy the great outdoors. Go for a walk, a hike or a bike ride or try something new — like tennis, kayaking or paddleboarding.
  5. Learn something new: Treat yourself and get inspired at the same time by signing up for an art class, trying out a new language or visiting a museum.
  6. Catch a flick: If you don’t usually have time to visit the movie theater, a trip to the cinema makes an awesome treat!
  7. Declutter and donate: Go through your closest and make a pile of gently used clothing you no longer wear, then take it to your local donation center. It may seem like a chore at first, but once you get through it, it’s an instant mood-booster.
  8. Call a friend: If your perfect day involves a friend or a family member, call them up and plan a fun day together.

  10. Pretend to be a tourist in your local area — Even if you’ve lived in the same place all your life, there’s sure to be a restaurant, coffee shop, used book store, hiking trail or park you’ve never experienced, get out and go!
