Each year, hospitals see a spike in accidents and injuries, caused by Fourth of July shenanigans. From swimming and grilling accidents to fireworks mishaps, there’s plenty that can go wrong during a Fourth of July celebration, so it’s important to be cautious. Follow the safety tips below to ensure you have a happy and safe holiday.

When it comes to fireworks, the National Safety Council recommends you let the experts handle the show. If you choose to use legal fireworks, be sure to follow these safety tips:

Never allow young children to handle fireworks

Older children should use them only under close adult supervision

Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol

Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear

Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands

Never light them indoors

Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material

Never point or throw fireworks at another person

Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting

Never ignite devices in a container

Do not try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks

Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding

Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire

Never use illegal fireworks

  Always supervise a grill when in use

 • Never grill indoors or an in any enclosed area like a camper or tent

 • Use long-handed tools specially made for cooking on the grill

 • Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited

Taking a trip to the lake or beach? Keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Always wear a life jacket when in the water or on a motorized water vehicle

  • Walk carefully into open waters and do not dive headfirst into the water

  • Never let children swim without an adult

  • Stay alert for local weather conditions and check for warning signs or flags
