Salmonella found in Chicago grocery store meats

Are you in the mood for delicious Mexican foods like pork tamales and carnitas, but time isn’t on your side? Buying premade foods at your local grocery store may seem like a good idea, but this convenience may come with a price — some grocery store foods can contain dangerous bacteria.

For example, four people in Chicago suffered salmonella contamination after eating pork tamales and carnitas from the deli section of the Sun View Produce grocery store in the Clearing neighborhood.

While the tamales and carnitas haven’t been sold at the store since August 5, 2019, the Chicago Health Department warns that if you’ve purchased these products as early as July 1 and still have them, you need to discard them, as they may be contaminated with salmonella.

Eating salmonella-contaminated foods can lead to salmonellosis. According to the USDA, it’s a very common bacterial foodborne illness that can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. These symptoms usually appear 12 to 72 hours after you eat the contaminated food.

Should you be affected by salmonellosis, you can recover from it at home by consuming foods loaded with probiotics or taking a high-quality probiotic supplement, and drinking enough fluids, particularly high-quality filtered water. In some cases, however, a salmonella infection can be fatal. If you notice black stools or stools that have a tar-like consistency, seek medical attention right away.

If you want to eat pork, it’s best to prepare your meals at home and use meat that comes from grass fed heritage pigs raised by a local farmer. You can also purchase pork with the American Grassfed Association (AGA) logo to ensure that the meat came from an animal that was allowed to roam on pasture and consumed a forage-based diet, and wasn’t given antibiotics or growth hormones.

More importantly, take the necessary steps to ensure your immune system is at full strength too. This is arguably one of the best ways you can defend your body against harmful bacteria like salmonella and shield yourself from the complications this pathogen can cause.
