Do you take an afternoon nap? Chances are you’re too busy to nap, but it would be a welcome addition to your daily routine if it were possible. A quick nap can leave you feeling revitalized after a busy morning, and ready to tackle the rest of the day. According to a recent study, that’s not all it can do. Napping is also linked to a lower risk of heart attack and stroke.

Swiss researchers monitored 3,462 people for an average of five years and noted their napping habits. More than half the participants reported taking no naps; 19% said they took naps once or twice a week; 12% said they napped three to five times a week; and 11% napped six to seven times a week

After reviewing the data, researchers found that occasional napping — classified as napping once or twice a week — was linked to a 48% lower risk of heart attack, heart failure and stroke, when compared to not napping at all.

Interestingly, the link was not present with more frequent napping. There was also no association of napping and a lower risk of heart disease, heart failure or stroke for those over the age of 65. Researchers noted, “While the exact physiological pathways linking daytime napping to cardiovascular disease risk is not clear, [this research] contributes to the ongoing debate on the health implications of napping, and suggests that it might not only be the duration, but also the frequency that matters.”

Previous research has also identified a link between napping and lower blood pressure levels, improved memory and improved cognitive function.
