A staggering 2,071,397 pounds of poultry products were recalled by Arkansas-based company Simmons Prepared Foods Inc., for possible contamination. According to the USDA, the products could be “contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically metal.” Recalled items include ready-to-cook chicken wings, chicken legs and chicken tenderloins, among other poultry products. The products were shipped to stores in eight states — Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.
The products affected by the recall were produced between October 21st and November 4th this year. They are labeled with establishment number "P-1949," "P- 486" or "P-5837” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Simmons Prepared Foods Inc. released a statement about the recall: "Food safety is a very serious matter at Simmons," the statement read. “That is why Simmons has issued a precautionary and voluntary recall of approximately 2 million pounds of fresh and frozen chicken products due to the potential to contain extraneous material, specifically metal. We are working closely with regulatory authorities and affected customers to expedite this product recall."
Consumers are urged to check any chicken they may have at home to make sure it’s not part of the recall. If a recalled product is located, it can be thrown out or returned to the store.
