Dollar Tree Warned by FDA for Selling Unsafe, Untested Drugs

Popular discount store Dollar Tree was issued a warning letter from The US Food and Drug Administration for selling potentially unsafe over-the-counter medications produced by foreign manufacturers. The letter, dated November 6, listed several Chinese suppliers that helped manufacture Assured brand drugs and other products for the store chain between 2016 and 2019. The manufacturers identified failed to test products and in one specific case, also failed to clean up rat feces littered throughout the facility.

According to the FDA’s letter, the discount store was placed on “import alert” due to the receipt of adulterated drugs. The FDA has requested that the company put a new system in place to ensure that it will no longer import the drugs.

Donald D. Ashley, director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement, “Americans expect and deserve drugs that are safe, effective and that meet our standards for quality. The importation and distribution of drugs and other products from manufacturers that violate federal law is unacceptable.”

He continued, “In this case, Dollar Tree has the ultimate responsibility to ensure that it does not sell potentially unsafe drugs and other FDA-regulated products to Americans. We will remain vigilant in our efforts to protect the U.S. public from companies who put the health of Americans at risk — whether through the manufacturing and distribution of products we regulate or other means.”

Randy Guiler, vice president of investor relations at Dollar Tree, said in a company statement, “Each of the items referenced in the report are topical, and not ingestible, products. As always, we are cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration. We plan to meet with the FDA in the near future and expect that our plans will satisfy their requirements in all regards.”
