CBD: Are You Really Getting What You Paid For?

There’s no doubt that CBD products have recently exploded onto the market, thanks to congress’ decision to end federal CBD prohibition. From lip balm and lotion to gummies, vape pens and capsules, hundreds of companies are putting out products that contain CBD — or at least claim to. With the sudden burst of new companies and products exploring previously uncharted territory, how do you know who to trust? The answer is to do your research. But Leafly, the world’s largest cannabis website, recently tested cannabis products to help get you started.

Leafly Certified Labs worked with Confidence Analytics — a Washington state-licensed cannabis lab — to test 47 different CBD products and determine how many delivered on what the label promised. The products came from a variety of sources, including grocery stores, gas stations, national drugstore chains and convenience stores. The lab results showed that most of the products tested did indeed contain CBD, however, the majority did not deliver the exact dosage promised. The lab found:

51% of products (24 of 47) delivered the promised CBD within 20% of the labeled dosage

23% of products (11 of 47) delivered some CBD, but less than 80% of the dosage promised

15% of products (7 of 47) delivered more than 120% of the promised CBD

11% of products (5 of 47) delivered no CBD whatsoever

Until the FDA begins regulating all CBD products, CBD manufacturers are free to sell their products as they please, and label them as such. If you’re purchasing CBD products, it’s important to be weary of those that contain added synthetics, pesticides or heavy metals.

While it seems clear that CBD can be beneficial for a wide range of health conditions, quality and dosing are important issues that cannot be overlooked. It’s also important to understand that it may not work for everyone. As a general rule, be sure to seek out reputable companies with certified organic CBD products to ensure the least amount of contamination with pesticides and other harmful agricultural contaminants.
