As coronavirus spreads around the world and in the U.S., scientists are exploring the possibility that four common herbs might be the answer to possible prevention or even a cure for the novel virus.
According to CyprusMail, in previous experiments with another type of coronavirus — SARS — extracts of licorice, sweet wormwood, aromatic evergreen and a fern had dose-dependent results in fighting SARS.
“In particular, Lycoris radiate (licorice) exhibited the most potent antiviral activity against the virus strain,” the news agency said. Further studies with the SARS virus showed that a compound in licorice roots, Glycyrrhizin, inhibited replication of the virus. Another component in licorice, Lycorine, also had strong antiviral results.
This isn’t really surprising, as licorice has a long history of use for respiratory illnesses. In fact, virtually all Chinese herbal formulas contain licorice because it assists in gastrointestinal absorption and "harmonizes" the herbal blends. In other words, it helps to enhance the effects of the other herbs.
Other herbs that scientists have reported early success rates against SARS are honeysuckle, eucalyptus and ginseng. All of the studies were in vitro, meaning it’s possible that the same results may not occur when given as an oral dose to humans but, still, scientists are hopeful they can serve as a starting point for Covid-19.
With honeysuckle, its bioactive components are the main reason it’s identified as “a plant of phytopharmaceutical importance,” according to a 2015 study, which notes that “Flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolic acids, terpenes and steroids were found as the main constituents.” You can even use an infusion of European honeysuckle flowers to make into a tea that’s helpful for treating coughs and colds, as well as upper respiratory tract infections and asthma.
As an antiseptic cleaning agent, it’s also a great cleanser with the added benefit of a pleasant fragrance. Try three drops of honeysuckle oil with 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. In cleaning your kitchen or bathroom, it’s a great alternative to use on sinks, countertops, toilets, showers and floors.
Should you decide to try honeysuckle, licorice or any other herbal element, always remember to check with your home health care provider first, like you would with any medication, to make sure that you’re using them properly.
In the meantime, the best way to fight and prevent coronavirus is to live as healthy a life as possible with good nutrition and proper hygiene. This mean frequent hand-washing, not touching your face, eyes, nose or mouth with your hands and even making sure your cellphone is clean.
