With restaurants closed and education facilities shut down, America’s food supply is teetering on a precipice that goes beyond quarantines, job losses and people falling ill and dying from COVID-19.
With no market for their products, meat processing plants are closing, farmers in warmer parts of the country are leaving crops to rot in the fields and dairy producers are dumping milk. As ports lock up and borders close, the devastation is hitting the shipping industry hard and, ultimately, the poorest of the poor will suffer even more.
