Poverty Rate Likely to Reach Highest Levels in Half a Century

So many people are out of work due to the pandemic that not only could unemployment rates reach 30% by the end of the quarter, but the poverty rate could end up being higher than it’s been in a half-century.

That would put 15.4% of Americans at the poverty level this year, even if the economy miraculously recovers. In all, that would mean 10 million Americans will be classified as poverty-stricken.
