An immunologist who coinvented the HPV vaccine, Ian Frazer, says “there may never be a vaccine against COVID-19” because respiratory vaccines are tricky to create, and past experience shows the viruses you may be trying to find a vaccine for burn themselves out before a vaccine is created.
Plus, “The wrong vaccine could make things worse so we have to be very selective about what part of the virus we want to attack,” Frazer said — and that’s why currently there are 100 teams looking at a coronavirus vaccine.
An example of a failed attempt at a respiratory vaccine is the one scientists were trying to find for 2003 SARS virus.
