The U.S. Department of Agriculture sat on its hands while millions of pounds of crops rotted in the fields and relief lines formed for miles outside food banks that couldn’t meet the demand.
The devastation is a two-pronged disaster that has robbed farmers of income and jobless Americans of food. It took the USDA until mid-April to come up with a package that would offer some relief on both ends, but officials said it would take another month before it could be implemented — which will be too late to save the crops, farmers said.
