In the first half of the 20th century, George Orwell wrote a dystopian novel, “Nineteen Eighty-Four,” in which the government controlled every aspect of a person’s life, including their very thoughts. Today, scientists seem intent on acting out that book, using the COVID-19 pandemic, national security and public health as their justification for doing so.
Artificial intelligence — AI — is the key in this move to implement electronic surveillance of everything about you, these new world framers insist. There are just a few impediments left to hurdle, they say, such as addressing what they call the “structural factors” or “regulatory barriers” of privacy laws, cash and credit/debit cards, in-person shopping and private car ownership.
