Hypertension Drugs Being Tested for Effectiveness Against COVID-19

coronavirus

A clinical trial is underway to see if drugs used for treating high blood pressure, heart failure and diabetic kidney disease — called ACE inhibitors — might also reduce the severity of COVID-19 infections, lowering rates for intensive care units, the use of mechanical ventilators and mortality.

ACE inhibitors are also used to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, heart failure, stroke and deaths from cardiovascular causes, but since the use of ACE inhibitors could potentially increase the number of portals for SARS-CoV-2 to enter cells throughout the body, some scientists are concerned that patients who take these drugs may be at greater risk for COVID-19 infection and worse outcomes.
