As of April 25, 2020, an estimated 271,600 people in New York state and 141,754 in New York City have been infected with COVID-19, despite Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s strong measures to fight it.
Under an order called PAUSE (for Policies Assure Uniform Safety for Everyone), Cuomo initially required all nonessential workers to stay home and banned all nonessential public gatherings at least through April 29, 2020. From mandating that everyone stay inside except for solitary outside exercise to urging neighbors to monitor and tattle on others if they saw them not abiding within the governor’s orders, the rules called for stiff fines and penalties for not obeying them.
The governor announced Monday, May 11, that restrictions on some areas of the state will be lifted as soon as May 15.
