States may be opening up a little, and some people may finally be going back to work, but the news isn’t all good. According to researchers at the University of Chicago, the pandemic closings so adversely affected the job situation that 42% of those who lost their jobs will not get them back.
Several factors are playing into this, including record levels of unemployment insurance that pay so well they effectively discourage some people from looking for work. The thing is, that insurance doesn’t last forever and when it’s gone, the jobs will be too, the researchers predict.
