Nursing Homes Say COVID-19 Numbers Are ‘Insanely Wrong’

coronavirus

Recently released CDC and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) COVID-19 case counts and deaths at U.S. nursing homes are so incorrect, they don’t make sense and are “insanely wrong,” the facilities’ directors say.

For example, CMS data show that a rehab center in New Jersey had 753 deaths — yet the facility has only 90 beds. In Chicago, Smith Village is listed as having the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country, with 1,105 confirmed among residents and 955 confirmed cases among staff. But Smith Village has only 100 beds, and their actual numbers are 38 positive cases among residents and 14 deaths, and among staff, 37 positive or suspected cases and no deaths.

A spokesperson at CMS who was asked why the agency didn’t contact all the nursing homes with such high numbers to confirm the CMS report did not respond.
