It’s known that COVID-19 survives in the digestive tract and can show up in an infected person’s feces, but a new study shows that a flushing toilet can create a large, widespread cloud of virus-containing aerosol droplets that lasts long enough for the droplets to be breathed in by others.
Researchers used simulations to show that the flushing of a toilet creates vortices that carry droplets to a height of nearly 3 feet and are so small they float in the air for over a minute, making them easy to inhale. Simply closing the lid before flushing could prevent inhalation, given there is a lid.
