A new study indicates that COVID-19 infections may be 80 times greater than initially reported. What this means is that, if the infection rates are that much higher, the death rate is a fraction of what was originally thought.
Penn State researchers, who conducted the study and published a paper on it Monday, June 22, 2020, said it also looks like COVID-19 cases “doubled nearly twice as fast as originally believed.”
“Remarkably, the size of the observed surge of excess ILI (influenza-like illnesses) corresponds to more than 8.7 million new cases during the last three weeks of March, compared to the roughly 100,000 cases that were officially reported during the same time period,” researchers said in a press release.
