After the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
posted their school reopening guidelines for a “safe” school day, a parent felt
compelled to respond. “I don’t usually comment on current events,” she said,
“but I was shocked when I read the CDC guidelines for opening schools.”
So what does a “safe” school day look like? The students
will begin by sitting alone on a bus, separated by partitions. At school, they’ll
be greeted by staff wearing masks, and they will be required to wear masks,
themselves, the entire seven hours they are there. Add to that one-way
hallways, no recess, no cafeteria and regular announcements reminding them to
wear their masks, wash their hands and not touch their faces or each other and
you have social isolation to an extreme.
What it all adds up to is a disturbing form of
institutionalized isolation and fear mongering — is this fear and emotional
withdrawal from socialization what you call SAFE? the mother wonders.
