A Harvard lawyer serving as a technical adviser on Microsoft’s Bill Gates’ ID 2020 initiative has quit. Citing concerns over the commercial direction Microsoft appears to be headed with its digital immunity and identity certificates, Elizabeth Renieris said, “I cannot be part of an organization overly influenced by commercial interests that only pays lip service to human rights.”
Renieris also questioned the project’s objectives and mission, which she said didn’t appear to be going in the direction that ID 2020 was supposed to be headed, and that subsequently was “resulting in the erosion of civil liberties.”
