New Study: 81% May Already Be Immune to SARS-CoV-2

A new study pre-published online shows that as many as 81% of individuals may already have immunity to SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Researchers looked at cell markers CD4+ and CD8+ cell-mediated immunity, which scientists use to determine protection from viral infections.

Study authors said: “Cross-reactive SARS-CoV-2 T-cell epitopes revealed preexisting T-cell responses in 81% of unexposed individuals, and validation of similarity to common cold human coronaviruses provided a functional basis for postulated heterologous immunity in SARS-CoV-2 infection.”
