Flu Virus With ‘Pandemic Potential’ Found in China

An emerging flu virus that infects both pigs and humans could be the next pandemic, according to a study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Study authors said they had identified a reassortment strain of the 2009 H1N1 virus that “has acquired increased human infectivity” and has pandemic potential.

Scientists suggested that measures be taken to control the virus in pigs, and to closely monitor swine industry workers for signs of infection. The annual flu vaccine covers the 2009 strain, but it may not work for the new strain.
