RNA vaccines which are being touted as the future preventive cure for COVID-19 are virtual scientific experiments, the likes of which mankind has never seen before. They use genetic manipulation to snip a piece of messenger RNA — mRNA — to trigger an immune response.
This yet-to-be-approved method of genetic tinkering has never been tested outside a lab dish. In humans, unlike normal vaccines that use tiny amounts of the antigen and adjuvant to invoke a response, RNA vaccines actually use your own DNA to turn your body into “a miniature vaccine factory.”
Three Pharma giants have joined forces with a small lab at Imperial College London and the People’s Liberation Army Academy of Military Sciences in China in the race to create this vaccine.
