Report: Trump’s Coronavirus Vaccine Czar Helped GSK Misrepresent a Diabetes Drug

The new “Coronavirus Czar” President Trump appointed in May has a sketchy past that includes helping drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) downplay the safety risks of the company’s diabetes drug, Avandia. Moncef Slaoui was once chairman of vaccines for GSK.

According to Daily Beast, “While working for the Pharma giant, Slaoui helped misrepresent scientific research on a drug that had harmed tens of thousands of Americans.” And, he continued defending Avandia and even testifying it was “superior” to other medicines, even though a Cleveland Clinic cardiologist found it increased the risk of heart attacks and deaaths in patients, Daily Beast said.

Slaoui is in charge of overseeing the race for a COVID-19 vaccine, aka Operation Warp Speed. While drug industry leaders seemed thrilled at the appointment, citizen advocates like Public Citizen were skeptical, and worried that he may allow a vaccine to be rushed through approval.
