How Nursing Homes Got Away With Hiding Bodies During the COVID-19 Outbreak

coronavirus

Deaths in nursing homes account for nearly half of all COVID-19 cases in the U.S. —  8.6 times the rate of death for the rest of the over-75 population. What’s worse, the death count very well may be much worse.

One reason so much devastation occurred in these settings, the ACLU says, is because of “system mismanagement and discrimination” against the homes’ residents.

But what about the bodies? How did — and do — they manage to hide the bodies when so many are dying? The answer is a macabre tale that includes shipping bodies out of a facility, packing them in a shed and squeezing them into morgues. They got away with it, the ACLU says, because of shoddy and deceptive record-keeping and ineffective state laws that don’t require detailed data reporting.
