The CEO of vaccine company Merck — which is no stranger to fast-tracking a vaccine — says that rushing a COVID-19 vaccine to market would be a “grave disservice” to the public. A vaccine normally takes years of research and clinical trials, he said, to ensure both safety and effectiveness.
“Ultimately, if you are going to use a vaccine in billions of people, you’d better know what that vaccine does,” CEO Kenneth Frazier said. While Frazier didn’t name names, CNN earlier had quoted an anonymous Trump administrator who admitted a current vaccine candidate would be released before Phase 3 trials — which measure safety and effectiveness — are complete.
