Clinical results for COVID-19 vaccine candidates are beginning to trickle in and, so far, Pfizer/BioNTech are reporting adverse reactions in more than half the participants. The trial is extremely small — 45 volunteers — and includes only healthy adults aged 18 to 55.
Varying levels of pain, fever and sleep disturbances were reported, with two of the 45 reporting Grade 3 reactions. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services describes Grade 3 actions as “severe or medically significant but not immediately life-threatening; hospitalization or prolongation of hospitalization indicated; disabling; limiting self care” such as “bathing, dressing and undressing, feeding self, using the toilet, taking medications.”
