Do you know what your face mask is made of? If it’s a
commercial type sold in hundreds of outlets around the world, it’s possible
that the mask you’re wearing could give you asthma, or exacerbate your asthma
if you already have it.
For example, surgical masks are made of plastics like
polypropylene, a known asthma trigger that The Lung Association Ontario
includes in its “All About Asthma Triggers” information pamphlets for health
care providers. Face shields, on the other hand, consist of plastics such as
polycarbonate, propionate, acetate, polyvinyl chloride, and polyethylene
terephthalate glycol (also known as PETG).
