The insurer for the U.S. Military, Tricare, sent emails to
more than 600,000 beneficiaries informing them that they had coronavirus. The
email, which went to people in 31 states, asked the 600,000 “patients” to
consider donating whole blood or plasma to help others fight the coronavirus.
The only problem was this was a mistake — actually, only
31,000 people “across the Department of Defense, including service members,
family members, civilian employees and contractors” have had COVID-19.
Although the insurance company sent out error notices within
hours telling beneficiaries the message was a mistake, it had already been
published by many news agencies and social, including the American Military
News agency and Facebook.
