As scientists around the world look for low-cost, quick and
reliable tests to determine whether someone is infected with COVID-19, researchers
at the University of Adelaide in Australia think they’ve found an answer — with
dogs.
They currently are working with international experts to
train sniffer dogs that, in just a few months, could work at airports and
hospitals to screen travelers and staff members. Previous research has shown
that dogs can detect viral infections in people, a university press release
said. They can even detect the infection in people before they have symptoms.
Another point that makes dogs a promising test tool is that
studies show dogs are not susceptible to SARS-CoV-2.
