Scientists studying T cell memory to common cold
coronaviruses have found that it’s possible that infection with any one of
three different cold viruses may offer some protection against SARS-CoV-2.
“We demonstrate a range of pre-existing memory CD4+
T cells that are cross-reactive with comparable affinity to SARS-CoV-2 and the
common cold coronaviruses HCoV-OC43, HCoV-229E, HCoV-NL63, or HCoV-HKU1,”
researchers wrote in their study abstract.
Their findings suggest that 20% to 50% of individuals may be
carrying the CD4+T cells found in SARS-CoV-2.
