A study at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine
and Public Health found symptoms of depression and anxiety in two-thirds of
high school athletes whose school sports had been canceled due to COVID-19.
The study also found that the athletes’ physical activity
had decreased 50% during the shutdown — a confounding factor that can
contribute to increased levels of anxiety. “We know that exercise is a
powerfully antidepressant and powerfully antianxiety,’’ said Claudia Reardon,
one of the study authors. “Exercise has biological effects on our endorphins,
which are our feel-good brain hormones.”
Especially disheartening is the fact that “sports are such
an identity for students,” a former football and baseball coach added.
