Nobody’s going to get into New York City without going through
a sheriff-patrolled checkpoint, if Mayor Bill de Blasio gets his way. The mayor
ordered the checkpoints Wednesday morning, August 5, 2020, explaining that they
are “meant to enforce an order Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed in July.”
According to Reason news, “Cuomo's order requires New York
visitors hailing from 34 states and Puerto Rico to self-quarantine for 14
days.” The mayor intends to enforce the order by stopping everyone at bridges
and tunnels to inform them of the quarantine rules. If you don’t cooperate, you
could be stuck with a $10,000 fine, or a $2,000 fine for refusing to fill out
required health forms.
Currently, 35 states are on the governor’s quarantine target
list, which requires you to stay in your residence or hotel room for 14 days
while you self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms. The New York City Sheriff’s
Office will be manning the checkpoints.
