To mandate or not to mandate? Do masks work or not? As the
controversy about whether states and local governments should be mandating
masks — and whether they even work or not — rages on, a mathematical
statistician offers his take on the issue.
According to Nassim Nicholas Taleb, there is a complex
mathematical basis for wearing masks, and he blasts those who may be making
errors by using incompetent computational methods to both deny or support the
usefulness of masks.
On the other hand, Public Health England, which openly
supports wearing masks, also cites clinical studies showing that, outside the
clinical setting, masks may not be as helpful as some may think.
