Even though many cigar smokers told researchers in April
that they planned to stop smoking due to COVID-19 concerns, they later reported
that they were actually smoking more during the pandemic.
Study author Sarah Kowitt, Ph.D., an assistant professor in
the UNC School of Medicine, gave several reasons why smoking may have
increased, including: stress, anxiety, being bored at home, using up stockpiled
tobacco products or no access to cessation resources like pharmacotherapy or
behavioral support.
