In a landlocked country in West Africa, children are
starving to death as each month of the coronavirus shutdown goes by. Many citizens
are largely dependent on the crops they grow for their income, but with the
markets closed, they can’t sell their products — or buy what they don’t grow
themselves.
The story repeats itself from sub-Saharan Africa to Latin
America to South Asia, The Associated Press reports. Also due to coronavirus
shutdowns, many are cut off from medical aid as they wait out the pandemic. As
a result, children are starving to death worldwide at the rate of 10,000 a
month. Another 550,000 have wasting disease, aka malnutrition.
