People who come down with COVID-19 are often given
antibiotics to fight possible secondary bacterial infections, particularly if
they’re hospitalized. The problem is research is showing that this increased
use of antibiotics could be stressing community water treatment plants.
And, once the water from the plants is released, it may lead
to increased levels of those antibiotics in the environment, potentially posing
a risk to fish and the food sources they depend on.
