Citing vaccine disasters in times past, such as when a polio
vaccine had to be dumped in 1955 in the U.S. because it caused polio in 40,000
children, CNN is questioning the warp-speed promotion of a vaccine for
COVID-19.
In fact, given the past histories of other vaccines that
were rushed to market, pushing a COVID vaccine too soon would be a “colossally
stupid move,” according to Dr. Howard Markel, a pediatrician at the University
of Michigan who spoke with CNN.
CNN said a too-early COVID-19 vaccine could be “a nightmare”
if the vaccine proves to be unsafe or doesn’t offer complete protection — and
people die. Also, “if a substandard vaccine gets an EUA, a better vaccine may
never get approval, because people would be reluctant to enroll in trials and
risk getting a placebo instead of a vaccine,” CNN said.
