Trump Administration Will Redirect $62 Million Owed to the WHO

coronavirus

The remainder of the annual dues the U.S. is supposed to pay to the World Health Organization will be redirected to other health-related causes, mostly to children’s immunization and influenza surveillance, the Trump administration announced.

The U.S. is supposed to pay $120 million a year to the WHO; so far this year $58 million has been paid. Separately from the annual dues, the United States Agency for International Development also sends money to the WHO, and that money, $68 million, will be paid, the agency said.

The move to redirect the U.S. dues still owed, about $62 million, is in keeping with President Trump’s decision in July 2020 to withdraw U.S. membership from the WHO by July 6, 2021. According to The Washington Post, the WHO’s annual budget is $6 billion; of that amount in 2019 the U.S. contributed $533 million — about 4.4 times its annual dues.
